The Witches of Vardø: Feminist fiction with Anya Bergman

Featured Speakers

Anya Bergman & Alice Tarbuck

Please note that the venue of this event has changed. It will now take place in the Anatomy Lecture Theatre at Summerhall

The Witches of Vardø is set in Vardø on the Varanger Peninsula in Norway during the witch trials of the seventeenth century and is based on true events.

At the heart of the story is a group of women – mothers and daughters – accused of witchcraft and brutalised by the men in power. This is a propulsive, epic, feminist book about women, motherhood, power, brutality and salvation.

To take us back through history to these bitter times, and to bring these women and their stories to the bookshop, we are thrilled to welcome the author Anya Bergman, to be interviewed by Alice Tarbuck.

'A triumph. Brilliant, brutal, captivating, heartstopping, heart-wrenching, and with the best kick-ass feminist female characters ever. I adored it!' - Sinéad Moriarty
