We continue our first Book Fringe weekend with a dive into one of the big questions of our time: if notions of punishment and prisons don’t keep us safe, what does?

In the clear-eyed and utterly necessary Unsafe, community organiser and professor Lamble applies insights learned while organising against prisons and policing in challenging the twenty-first century ‘gender wars’ and the backlash against trans rights. The narrative that safety can be secured through exclusion, and policing of difference, is a seductive one which also distorts the meaning of safety altogether. There is an alternative and it lies in solidarity, care and transformative justice

Come down for a lunchtime talk about the fundamental questions laid bare in the backlash against trans lives, and how we counteract them together.

Our speaker:

Lamble is a community organizer and Professor of Criminology and Queer Theory at Birkbeck, University of London. Their work explores questions of gender, sexuality, and justice with a focus on feminist and abolitionist alternatives to prisons, police, and punishment. They are based in London.
